These bills are the latest step in our fight over the last decade to make the Parkway safer for everyone and is the result of years of advocacy from members of our community who have witnessed far too many collisions, injuries and fatalities.
Since the tragic shooting death of Bijan Ghaisar by US Park Police in 2017, the U.S. Park Police has nearly completely abdicated their responsibility to regulate unsafe driving on the Parkway. While improvements are years away due to lack of federal funding, Delegate Krizek and I were successful at passing legislation to authorize the Virginia State Police and Fairfax County Police to conduct traffic enforcement on the Parkway.
The bills are now on Governor Spanberger’s desk and will need her signature by April 13.

No Fairfax County PD or VA state police speed cameras please on the GW Parkway please. They are just another data/cash grab by the tech bros and the county and state governments with no accountability.
ReplyDeleteI don’t trust Spanberger to ever do the right thing. She’s a liar and a hypocrite.
ReplyDeleteI am absolutely 100% against having Fairfax County Police enforce traffic laws on the GW Parkway. The Fairfax County Police needs to concentrate and worry about enforcing traffic laws in their jurisdiction first! I know the GW Parkway runs through Fairfax County but that road is the responsibility of the US Park Police. There are far too many laws being broken daily on our Fairfax County roads (and other places) that are not being addressed! People are driving too fast, tailgating/aggressive driving, running red lights, blowing through STOP signs, passing on double yellow lines, passing school busses when they are stopped loading and unloading kids and more. I see these things happen everyday and I hardly ever see anyone being pulled over. I am not faulting our officers for this because I know Fairfax County Police are still short staffed.
ReplyDeleteSo, until Fairfax County Police is fully staffed and things improve drastically on our county roads, our Police Officers should not be burdened with having to patrol and enforce laws on a road that is not in their jurisdiction.
Governor Spanberger, your fellow Virginia Congressmen/women, Senators and yourself need to do your jobs as our elected officials and work with the US Park Authority/Police and convince them that they need to do more/better traffic enforcement on the GW Parkway. Also, I would like to add that the issues on the GW Parkway started well before President Trump's current term in office. Most of the bad offenses didn't start until after the lane diet was implemented.
My understanding is that this becomes law with or without her signature unless she either vetos it or sends it back with amendment.
